ASL dictionary?

by admin on December 8, 2009

Hiya,

Can anyone recommend the best sign language dictionary available? The only draw back with sign language as opposed to other languages is that it’s often hard to read the illustration in the dictionaries and I’m afraid of learning the sign wrong. If you know of a very clear, easy to understand dictionary I’d be most interested. Thank you!

Best help you can get is to practice with someone who is deaf… they usually would be more than happy to help you

There is actually a book entitled The Dictionary of American Sign. I’m sorry I don’t recall the author or publisher and I’ve lent my copy. It is fairly thorough! I’ve also heard there are websites that can help with proper form as they are video. I have not tried these sites and can’t recommend specifics but it may be worth looking into!

Also check into your local school for the deaf, they will be happy to help and may even offer volunteer opportunities that would give practical application experience!

As another option, if you reside in the states, check on classes with your local community college. I took such classes in both junior high and high school!

Good luck!
