Baby sign language? Has anyone tried with their infants?

by admin on December 19, 2009

I keep hearing about all of the benefits of sign language with infants. I work in the social work field and it is the big trend right now, so I bought a kit at Target with the DVD’s and books and all of that to try and introduce that to my son. He is just under a year and not very willing to sit still for long. Has anyone tried to teach their baby sign language and was it successful? Have you seen the benefits from them knowing signing? Just curious if it is really worth my time and energy or is it just another trendy baby fad.

My husband taught my daughter a few signs and she has learned a few more at daycare. Mostly she knows more, please, and thank you. He may just be too young yet but don’t give up. Work on 1 sign at a time and keep using it, eventually he will catch on! Children learn (and retain info) the best when they are young and it could be very beneficial to him in the future.

I taught my baby baby sign language she didn’t actually start doing it herself until she was close to a year but it was really helpful while she wasn’t saying full words she would sign for milk when she was thirsty and please and thank you etc. I think it did keep her from getting frustrated as often too since she had a way of communicating. Now that shes two she is really smart for her age says lots of full sentences was it because of the baby sign maybe.

I think its a very good ideal. they can let you know alot by sign language. My granddaugter is 19 months old and not hearing impaired, only can say few words but with sign language she lets me know when she is hungry , thirsty, and if something hurts on her. She really picks up on the signs really fast. I also like the fact that I can tell her to be quite while out in public without screaming at her. If you dont want to get too involved in learning all of the signs then teach him a few and see how he responds to it. Good luck

i tried the signs with my son although when he got older he tended to get mad when everyone in the room didnt understand what he was getting across

I agree with most of the other posts here. It’s amazing and really lessens frustration for your baby.

We used baby sign and we literally did not have a single day of the dreaded “Terrible Twos”. This is due to us understanding everything he wanted or needed at such an early age. His first sign was “doggie” at 6 months old, then came “milk” “more” “mommy”, etc.

It was a great time! Now that he’s much older, going on 6 now, he is reading at a second grade level, which we contribute to him learning how to communicate so very early.

http://www.babiesandsignlanguage.com is a great site to learn free baby signs and how to teach your baby sign language.

It’s typical for him not to sit very still at age 1. However, if you use signs that are fun for him, such as his favorite toy, or favorite food, he may perk up to it much sooner. :-)

Hope this helps! But yes, I’d definitely go for it!
