Is it too late to introduce even a few Baby Signs?

by admin on January 2, 2010

He’s almost 2.5 and my mother instinct says he doesn’t have any developmental issues, he just isn’t ready to talk, but is too late to introduce 2 or 3 signs, like potty, hungry, thirsty…. I wanted to do the baby signs thing when he was 6 months old but everyone said it would be a waste of money because he would be talking in no time. Grrrrrrr!

please, for his sake, get him evaluated. No language at 2.5 IS a developmental issue!!!

Go ahead and start signing to him. Just keep speaking as you sign.

I’d work more on actual speech. If you do sign atleast say the word along with it.
Even if you are mommy instinct (which very well could be right :) ) says there is no delay, there is NO harm in getting him checked out!

I would say go ahead and introduce the signs so you can have some form of communication, but I would also talk to your pedi about an evaluation. My pedi is concerned b/c my daughter says few words at 18-months. “Not ready to talk” at 2.5 years sounds like an evaluation is in order.

Good luck!

I think it is a great idea. When my nephew was 18 months old the daycare he went to and where i worked taught sign language to the kids no matter how old they are. The teach it in the baby room all the way up to school age. I think it is a great thing to know. It helps you communicate with your child and that way you know what he wants and are able to help him out. I would go a head and start it with him.

My granson was signing at 1…they talk and sign to him at daycare, which is where he learned it. Have your child evaluated by someone…there are definitely some concerns.

Go ahead and teach him signs. It’s never too late. I would also contact early intervention and have an eveluation done. If nothing else, you’ll get peace of mind and some ways to help him learn to speak. Good luck :-)

Sure go ahead! I don’t think he’s too late to learn a few signs. I would talk to his pediatrician about the seemingly lack of communication skills though. At this age he should be able to say quite a few single words and just a few two or three word phrases.

My son and daughter didn’t talk until they were both well over 3. Main reason they didn’t have to. They made up their own signs and sounds that I understood and never thought twice about. My middle son wasn’t even two when he started. For the lady up towards the top they are both extremely bright children as well as my middle child they just chose not to talk until I made them. My daughter is well above grade average in school. I don’t know that I would teach him signs I would make him start saying what he wants it’s amazing how fast he will pick up a vocabulary if he’s forced to. If it goes on much longer though I would have him evaluated.

i think you need to do allsorts with him, read books repeat words over and over help him becuase at 2.5 he should be talking a little at least, signs are good too, you should of gone with your instincts when he was young, hindsight is a pain the a ss

2.5 no language no its not to late but please see someone as this is not a good sign your child may need help speech therapy or hearing tests.

Don’t fret It wouldn’t hurt to get him evaluated
There is a great show called signing time she sings fun songs that teach children lots of words it is very repetitive so it teaches your child to speak also
Its so easy to learn this way and makes those connectons for foreign langugae development later on. My son loves this show he is 27 months. An has an excellent vocab and I owe it all to signing time.
